You People Care Too Much

I feel like people care too much about their looks all the time. Whether it be online or in person, all I hear about is people hyperfixating on every inch of their body: asking if their make up or hair looks good or having a million touch ups to look perfect all the time. And it’s not just a girl thing, I see guys all the time making sure everything looks perfect.
I’m not trying to say you shouldn’t be healthy, because you need to eat, sleep, and look presentable when you walk outside of your house. But I’m tired of people worrying so much about their looks, because, at the end of the day, no one cares.
I think social media has pushed this notion that makes you think you need to be perfect or else someone will make fun of you, especially since so many videos go viral of people making fun of others they deem as ‘weird’. Also, most of the minors living on this planet grew up with having internet access and have no idea who they really are. I mean I don’t even know who I really am, because I only know what has been fed to me all my life. And if you think you really know who you are, then let’s check that screen time because I guarantee you know less than you think you do.
Now you might wonder, “Alyssa, what was the whole point of this blog if you’re going to say you hate how everyone is concerned with looks and people don’t really know themselves because of social media?” Well, I’m just pointing out it's hard to understand who you are when you’ve grown up on social media. I know most people get their ‘style’ whether it be clothes, hair, or makeup from the internet. There's no way 75% of the clothes in your closet aren't inspired from something you saw on social media. It’s not that it’s a bad thing, it’s just the truth being a young person living with an algorithm in your pocket screaming “run, don’t walk ” to every item. And an algorithm shoving the most beautiful people telling you to go hit the gym. It’s hard not to care about how you present yourself because that’s what social media and our society forces you to do to stand out.
I still think there's positives in this. Sometimes, you simply just need to touch grass. Although algorithms are not going to become any less addicting, there are ways to understand yourself better. Because truthfully if you start worrying about yourself and becoming the best version of yourself, your looks aren’t going to matter that much. You’ll be working on yourself on things that actually matter and finding new journeys that the distractions will start to fade. If people think you’re weird for being you, then that’s their problem. All you need is yourself.
I encourage you to take a second and truly consider, who am I?
